CDI’s capacity building program focuses on empowerment of leaders by improving their capacity to plan and implement sustainable community development projects. To accomplish this goal, the program focuses on training, research, monitoring and evaluating development needs of target communities and implementing effective plans for addressing these. The communities in the project area are complex and dynamic and each one has its own challenges. The initiatives conducted by the Capacity Building program aim to assist all sectors of the community to work cohesively to address development needs and issues.

CDI helps communities to improve their understanding of their own socio-economic dynamics, cultural interrelationships and all of the associated complexities involved. This is achieved through regular visits to the targeted communities and a broad range of projects and workshops aimed at capacity building at the village level. The social impacts of rapid development have permanent effects on local cultures in the targeted communities. CDI works with local communities to record events and information of cultural importance and promote awareness of customs and traditions to younger generations.

Partnering with government agencies is the key to ensuring sustainable development is achieved amongst the targeted communities. CDI will work closely with provincial and local level government officials to support and assist them in the development and implementation of their development plans. CDI’s own monitoring and evaluation processes produce useful data for development planning. CDI will also identify and pursue additional research interests for more detailed analysis of specific social development topics. Data and findings will be widely shared and reviewed with government departments and other development partners and incorporated into development planning.

Awareness on gender issues and promoting the sensitivity to the impacts of gender relations is an important component of CDI’s capacity building program. CDI maintains a cross-functional gender committee to ensure gender issues are identified, evaluated and addressed in all of its programs. CDI also promotes understanding of gender issues and relations amongst the government agencies and other development partners it works with.
