Educational opportunities in the rural communities within the Project Impacted areas (PIA) are limited and as such CDI as an NGO is now committed to assisting these rural communities with a second chance in education.
CDI's education program focuses on improving the educational opportunities, making non-formal education available to the targeted communities whilst providing a broad range of support for the formal education system to improve its capacity for providing education services needs. CDI has refocused its programs from the general community development programs, to a more cost effective single training NGO beginning 2010.
With the restructure in CDI as an NGO, it has affected the enrollment figure of students this year. The high turnover of Training & Education staff at the management level within a short period of time has also had an impact on the program outcome.
The UPNG Franchise Moro Open College has enrolled a total of 59 students (44 males & 15 females). Out of the 59, 53 are from Kutubu, 5 from Kikori and 1 from Samberigi who is currently residing in Port Moresby as a result of the tribal fight at Samberigi. From the 59 students, 53 are continuing students while the other 6 are new intakes (3males & 3 females).
The Flexible Open Distance Education (FODE) program facilitated by CDI Foundation Training and Education Program provides a second chance education opportunity for students wishing to do Grades 7, 8, 9 and 10 within the PIA.
This year, a total of 64 students (36 males and 28 females) from grades 7 – 10, have enrolled into the program. From the total of 64 students, 40 are new intakes (28 male and 12 female), while the rest are continuing students.
CDI Training and Education program aims to see more number of student enrollments both in CTCS and FODE to enable more into further studies in other institutions thus developing the human resource in the PIA.
